“Yellow, Blue, Red, & WHITE”

As @anamvahosv poured her heart out over the Zoom event, voicing the pain of the Colombian people due to injustice and abuse, my heart sank. I’ve heard this story before; when I was 10 and my mom shared the horrors of the Nicaraguan revolution and the stories of friends murdered, raped, and kidnapped. Family members that once walked among us are now memories that hang on our walls in picture frames and in albums under the coffee table. I heard it in the eyes of a father who never spoke of the violence he witnessed and instead spoke the loudest with his heartache and pain. He took it to the grave.

Innocent blood has been spilt into the earth, feeding the ground and giving birth to revolution.

{Process} ~ I soaked my hands in RED paint and hung them over the canvas. My hands trembled as the memories of all the people we’ve lost to greed, injustice, corruption and murder came to mind. All the people then and all the people bleeding now in Colombia.

As @bellaalvarezc sang I felt hope rise. Her notes sounded like birdsong as a divine presence fell.

{Process} ~ I sprayed YELLOW furiously on the canvas as I summoned the resilience of all my ancestors and stood with Colombian people today in an act of defiance and hope. {The YELLOW is laced with Gold. Worn by our ancient kings and a symbol of our glory}

WHITE: Representing the divine entity that is JUSTICE and what the cries of the people who’s blood was spilt DEMANDS.

{Process} ~ I started in the middle and worked outwardly in a circular motion as a prophetic act of unification.

Yellow, BLUE, RED: The Colombian people. Together. Added as one blended colour in the centre and the anchor of our hope.
